Burial Administration Timings

 

Leicester City Council has a provision for out of hour's burials which allow burials to take place outside normal working hours, including weekends and Bank Holidays.  As of 1st October 2021, the out of hour's burial administration service will be delivered exclusively by Crescent Funerals Ltd.

Out of hour's burials can also be booked through the Council's Cemeteries Department during their normal administration times (excluding public holidays). These are:

​

Monday to Thursday: 8:30 am to 5:00 pm

Friday: 8:30am to 4:30 pm

​

All bookings for burials that can be completed during the Council’s normal administration hours must be arranged through the Council's Bereavement Services office, even if the actual burial time falls into "out of hour's".

To allow time for the processing of burial paperwork during the summer months the cut-off for same-day burials by the Council will be 3:00 pm Monday to Friday. 

 

The out of hour's administration times for Crescent Funerals are:

 

Summer (April - September)

Monday to Friday: 3:00 pm to 7:00 pm

Saturday: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Sunday: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Bank Holidays*: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Winter (October - March)

Saturday: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Sunday: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

Bank Holidays*: 9:00 am to 3:00 pm

 *No burials will be permitted on Christmas Day or New Year’s Day.

Note: Booking of burial slots cannot be done in advance of the registration or the out of hour's booking process outlined below.

Note: A minimum of two hours notice period will be required for any out of hour's burial booking in a new grave and three hours will be required for a reserved grave. 

​

Out of Hour's Burial Booking Process 

 

Once the telephone registration appointment with the next of kin has been completed the Registrar will issue the Burial Order. This will be emailed directly to the family's nominated Funeral Director/Arranger and the Council's Bereavement Services department. 

 

If the Burial Order is received before 3.00pm (Monday - Friday) the Funeral Director/Arranger will be in a position to book a same-day out of hour's burial by contacting Bereavement Services directly. If the Burial Order is received after 3.00pm the Funeral Director/Arranger must contact Crescent Funerals on the number below to make the burial booking.

When contacted by the Funeral Director/Arranger our Duty Officer will first require a few details. These will be details of the deceased and the death including whether or not the death had been registered and if the required statutory documentation had been obtained. Once this information has been provided, our Duty Officer will explain, and begin the booking process.

 

To proceed our Duty Officer will require sight of both the completed Notice of Burial and the accompanying Burial Order. These must be emailed to our email address above and will be checked by our Duty Officer on receipt.

 

Where remote working is in place our Duty Officer will contact the applicant to discuss the booking specification as indicated on the Notice of Burial. This discussion with the applicant will be necessary as we need to ensure the applicant is fully aware of the options they have selected in respect of the burial and also to ensure they have been made aware of cemetery regulations including any fees and charges that will be levied by Leicester City Council.

Where a physical appointment is required or necessary such appointments will be arranged by our Duty Officer and details will be provided. If an interpreter is required please inform our Duty Officer during the initial call. 

 

Once the specification has been verified by the applicant, our Duty Officer will contact the cemetery on-call team to discuss the specification and agree on a burial time. This will then be communicated to the Funeral Director/Arranger. Once the Funeral Director/Arranger has accepted the timing, the booking with the on-call team will be confirmed. The on-call team will then ensure that the grave and associated requirements, such as the Janazgah etc, are prepared in advance of the agreed burial time.
